Prostate ultrasound allows the radiologist to view the prostate gland and surrounding tissue. The exam usually takes only 5-7 minutes to perform. An ultrasound imaging probe (transducer) is inserted into the rectum to image the prostate using high frequency sound waves. This study uses no radiation.
Prostate ultrasound may be ordered for several reasons, including:
- Prostate enlargement or nodule on physical exam
- Difficulty urinating or frequent urination
- Abnormal PSA (prostate cancer screening blood test)
- Pelvic pain
- Prior to testosterone therapy
The exam is performed by the radiologist, who can briefly discuss your results at the time of the scan.
