What is a Meckel’s Scan?
A Meckel’s Scan is a Nuclear Medicine test that may be used to diagnose abnormal tissue in the small intestine.
Why would my doctor recommend a Meckel’s Scan?
An imaging test may be ordered if your child experiences discomfort in the stomach or bloody stool. A Meckel’s scan is used to detect Meckel’s Diverticulum. Meckel’s Diverticulum is a small, abnormal pocket that forms in the wall of a child’s small intestine. Meckel’s Diverticulum often contains the same tissue as the stomach or pancreas, which can be the source of unexplained blood in stool.
What can I expect during a Meckel’s Scan?
If your child is scheduled to receive a Meckel’s scan, they will be advised not to consume any food at least six hours prior to imaging. Your child’s doctor may prescribe medication to take prior to the exam. Your child will be administered imaging material and imaged initially for 60 minutes. Additional images may be obtained.
