What is MR Neurography?
MR Neurography (MRN) is an advanced medical imaging technique that uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to produce detailed images of the nerves within the body and their surrounding structures. MRN can provide accurate images of the nerve roots, plexuses, and peripheral nerves.
When is MR Neurography helpful?
MRN is a valuable tool for diagnosing and evaluating a wide range of nerve-related conditions and is commonly requested to further evaluate abnormalities that have been detected on electromyelography (EMG) or to assess persistent nerve related symptoms with otherwise negative medical tests such as spinal imaging.
Why would my physician recommend MR Neurography?
Common reasons your physician may order an MRN include:
- Evaluating nerve entrapment or compression syndromes
- Peripheral nerve or plexus injury
- Inflammatory disease of nerves
- Nerve tumors such as schwannoma or neurofibroma
- Parsonage-Turner Syndrome (also known as neuralgic amyotrophy)
- Sciatica and piriformis syndrome
- Other disease of the peripheral nervous system
What Should I Expect for an MR Neurography Exam?
The exam is much like any other MRI and is generally well tolerated. There is no special preparation. There is no food or drink restriction prior to the exam, and you may take your usual medications (unless specifically directed differently). The length of the exam depends on the region being imaged and whether intravenous contrast will be used, typically between 40 and 60 minutes.
Certain medical implant devices are unsafe for MRI. However, many other implants such as joint replacements can usually undergo MR Neurography. It is important to inform your doctor and the MRI technologists about all medical implants prior to the exam as some implants will require technical modification to obtain the most optimal images. Patients with claustrophobia or aversion to loud noises may discuss options with their doctor.
Is MR Neurography safe?
MR Neurography is safe. As with conventional MRI, there is no ionizing radiation (e.g., x-rays). If intravenous contrast is used, it is the same type of gadolinium-based contrast used with any other MRI.

Can I bring my children to my imaging appointment?
All imaging procedures require that only the patient remains in the room during the exam. Because the patient requires our full attention, we cannot provide supervision for any accompanying children. If you wish to bring your children, you must arrange another adult to supervise your children during your procedure.
