Pediatric Imaging
Pediatric Imaging Overview
THE ONLY RADIOLOGY PRACTICE YOUR FAMILY WILL EVER NEED
One practice that treats patients with kid gloves.
Imaging exams and procedures can be stressful for anyone—especially young children. Whether your child suffers a fall or injury that requires a routine X-ray or has symptoms that warrant other imaging tests, you would go anywhere for the very best care. The good news is you do not have to go far.
Our practice allows you to get comprehensive imaging for a child of any age, from neonate to adolescent, right in your neighborhood. Fairfax Radiology is the only private practice in the region staffed with Board-Certified and Fellowship-Trained Pediatric Radiologists. In addition, our other subspecialists in Neurologic, Cardiac and Musculoskeletal Imaging bring extensive knowledge and understanding of pediatric anatomy and disease. This allows us to provide the best care possible for your child.
In addition to being specialized in the treatment of childhood injuries and disorders, our Pediatric Radiologists are also extremely gentle and caring when dealing with anxious children and their parents. Our team takes the time to ensure that you know exactly what to expect every step of the way because we would expect the same if it were our child.
Many of the pediatric exams offered at our locations are tailored versions of traditional adult imaging techniques such as X-ray, Ultrasound, Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). We do our best to provide these services in a child-friendly environment.

May I accompany my child during their examination?
In most cases, a parent may accompany a child for X-rays, Fluoroscopy and Ultrasound exams. Pregnant women and siblings under the age of 18 are not allowed in the imaging rooms. Young siblings may not be left unattended in the waiting areas. In the case of CT and MRI, you may be asked to wait outside the exam room during the exam. However, you may be with your child both before and immediately after the exam.
Why should a Pediatric Radiologist perform my child’s Fluoroscopic exam?
Pediatric Radiologists are trained to evaluate for diseases specific to patients of a young age. They are acutely aware of your concerns regarding ionizing radiation. They minimize exposure to radiation to the extent possible by employing numerous techniques including appropriate shielding, pulsed imaging and digital image capture.
Do you offer Low-Dose Computed Tomography (CT)?
At Fairfax Radiology, your child's health and wellbeing is our top priority. That is why we offer low-dose CT scanning at all of our facilities and ensure that every scanner is carefully programmed to provide the lowest achievable radiation dose, while generating the highest resolution images.
Will my child be able to lie still enough for an MRI?
We find that most children 8 years and older can lie still for the duration of an MRI. If your child is under 8, or if you do not think your child can remain still for the exam without sedation, you can arrange to have the study performed under anesthesia a hospital setting. To schedule an appointment in a hospital setting, please call Inova Specialized Scheduling at 571.472.1645.
Are the steps to prepare for my child’s examination the same as for it would be for an adult?
Many exam preparations are different for children and vary by patient age and size. Some exams in children may have no preparation at all. Discuss your child’s age and any questions or concerns you may have with our schedulers.
Where can I have my child’s study performed by a Pediatric Radiologist?
You do not always need to go to a hospital setting to have a Pediatric Radiologist evaluate your child. Our Pediatric Radiologists are available every Tuesday at our Reston-Herndon Imaging Center where they can perform many Fluoroscopic and Ultrasound exams.
In addition, you can find a Pediatric Radiologist daily at Inova Children's Hospital/Fairfax Medical Campus.
My child sees multiple physicians. Can test results be sent to each of them?
Yes. If you would like to have your child's test results sent to multiple physicians, simply provide us with the information for each physician as you register for your exam. Should you forget or require additional reports, you may request them here.
How do I get copies of my child’s reports and images?
If you would like to receive copies of your child's images and report, you may request them the day of the exam. If you forget to ask for them, you may request them here.
Can you compare my child’s examination to studies performed elsewhere?
If you would like to compare imaging performed by Fairfax Radiology with prior imaging performed elsewhere, simply bring both the older images and reports (if possible) with you to your appointment. We will incorporate all of the results into your child's medical record.
